This needs to be cut to the internal measurements of the frame. Your fabric needs to be about 5cm bigger on each side of the card. You can then cut it to size once you’ve got your frame. Place your embroidery onto the card. If you want to add relief, you can place cotton wool between the card and the fabric. Turn everything over. Fold the overhang of your embroidery design onto the card and glue it down.Pay particular attention to the corners. Cut the corners if you can’t fold over the fabric. You don’t want any irregularities once it’s all framed.  To make sure the fabric doesn’t come off, you can always glue bits of paper over the top. Again, make sure that they’re not covering the corners.Now you just have to put your embroidery in your frame and you’re done.Some people ma y want to make their frame from scratch. To do this, you’ll need pieces of wood and some good wood glue. You need to cut the wood to the size you want and cut diagonal joints at the edges. Glue the edges together and let it all dry for around 5 hours.Discover how to embroider eyes.Framing Your Embroidery Projects without GlueThere’s another way to frame embroidery. You can do this without glue but it’ll still take some time. Start by checking that the edges of your embroidery are uniform. The overhang needs to be the same on the left and the right and the top and the bottom. This will allow you to centre your embroidery. You can use thread to hold your embroidery in place. (Source: NicolePina)To avoid creases, iron your embroidery.  Once it’s flat, place your embroidery onto the card. The overhang will allow you to position your embroidery nicely in the centre of the frame.  To attach it without glue, you’re going to need to sew it down.With a needle and thread, start on one of the larger of the sides. Sew the two larger sides and then do the smaller sides.   This will give you a sort of grid.Make sure that you opt for a solid thread and pass two or three times if you need to. You don’t want to break a thread. Otherwise, your embroidery will hang.As you can guess this technique isn’t for beginners. However, if you get it right, it will hold your embroidery in place and you won’t have to worry about your embroidery coming loose, either.If you’re doing this for the first time, start with a small project. The bigger the embroidery, the harder it will be to keep in position as you attach it t o the card. Once you’ve got the technique sorted, you can move onto bigger projects.Should You Frame Embroidery with or without a Glass Pane?Whether or not you use a glass pane is down to each embroiderer. There are advantages and disadvantages to using one. Depending on the thread you use, you may want to think about whether or not you use a glass pane. The glass protects the embroidery from dirt and dust.  Some argue that the glass makes the whole thing look more “finished”. Of course, this is a matter of taste. After all, the decision is yours.With many different hand embroidery stitches (cross stitch, back stitch, crewel stitch, etc.), it can be difficult to get started. See what she had to say about her time in college: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options.How urban or safe is the campus?Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Perrine: Stanford Campus, known as The Farm, is breathtakingly beautiful. It is set on 8,180 acres, making it the largest contiguous college campus in America. Most students bike from classes because of the vast landscape. But, that was what made every day balanced, in terms of walking and exercise and enjoying the natural beauty of your surroundings. A car is great if you want to drive to San Francisco regularly. I had both a car and a bike. With regards to my personal experience, the campus is very safe. There are 24-hour security measures in place. At the time I attended, the CIA was even there providing security for Chelsea Clinton! The setting and proximity to San Francisco was one of the significant deciding factors when I was making my decision about where to go to school. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Perrine: It depends on what classes you choose to take. There is a range seminars include usually only 8-10 students as opposed to entry level classes such as Econ 1 which can get up to 100 or so. Most larger classes include smaller group sessions to create an opportunity for more one-on-one attention. You learn most from the students. The student body is composed of incredible individuals dedicated to learning and creating change. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Perrine: Most students live on campus and when I attended you were required to live on campus your freshman year. Stanford endeavors to create a diverse and interesting dorm life experience that brings together people from different cultures and ethnicities. My sophomore year, I lived in Toyon, where there were eating clubs, and that was great fun. There are also themed houses and alternative housing environments such as EBF, or the Enchanted Broccoli Forest. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Perrine: I studied Political Science and International Relations but took amazing classes in Physics and Human Biology. You have access to the best professors in the world and Stanfords academic reputation is among the best in the U.S. and internationally. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Perrine: Greek life does not play a big role in campus social life. When I attended, there were no housed sororities. Stanford encourages a different kind of social connectedness through academics and athletics. It is very easy to build great friendships in your dorms and beyond. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Perrine: The short answer is yes, to both. The Career Center is a great resource and especially at the graduate level, there are tons of companies looking to hire Stanford grads. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Perrine: The libraries are huge and there are many specialized libraries that give students the opportunity to access field specific materials. Stanfords resources are seemingly infinite and I never felt crowded or that there was a lack of space. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Perrine: I was very involved in community outreach programs in East Palo Alto and loved every minute of it. In terms of the community, Atherton and Palo Alto are very affluent and family oriented towns. But, San Francisco is only 20 minutes away and most students make the most of venturing into the city. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Perrine: Class sizes vary, but most large classes have small seminar groups that provide intensive academic support. The student body is not very large compared to UC schools which is why Stanford is very difficult to get accepted to. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Perrine: I loved working through StepOut, the community outreach program that I taught through. The kids we worked with had the opportunity to perform at Stanford in the spring and it was awesome. They were all at-risk kids and it was just great to see them so excited and say, I want to go to Stanford. That was part of a community outreach class I took and I taught for all four years. What I Wish I Knew About Picking a College Major The following is a guest post written by Tiffany Sorensen, a tutor and contributing writer with Varsity Tutors. There are a few points I wish someone had shared with me before I agonized over picking my college major. In hindsight, what felt like an impossible choice at the time was really not such a life-or-death matter. Here are three things you should know about picking a college major: 1. It is not the biggest decision I will have to make When the time comes to pick your college majorwhether you are a high school student filling out college applications or a college student nearing the end of sophomore yearyou should realize that this is not the biggest decision you will ever have to make. It may feel like it, but there are other significant issues you will encounter as well in your academic career, such as deciding whether or not to go to graduate school, whether you wish to stay at your current school or transfer, whether you wish to study abroad, etc. During my senior year of high school, I had trouble deciding which major to select on my college applications. I had such an array of interestshistory, languages, educationso I finally opted for undecided. I was troubled by my own inability to settle, but I became pleasantly surprised once I finally got to college and learned how easy it was to change majors; it basically just involved filling out a form from the Registrars Office and obtaining a signature or two. Switching majors is often a relatively painless process (though it ultimately depends on your schools policies), so long as you are not too close to graduating when you wish to make the switch. My major does not have to dictate my career path You may think the only way to secure a job in finance, for example, is by majoring in finance or business. A finance or business degree can make you a more qualified candidate for a job in finance, but it may not always be a necessity. Oftentimes, employers will gladly accept a degree in a related fieldin this case, perhaps mathematics, management, etc.or relevant internship experience, instead of a very specific degree. If this information is surprising to you, speak to some working professionals whom you know. Ask them about their higher education. You may learn that a practicing lawyer completed her undergraduate degree in biology, or that your English teacher first studied ceramics. It is extremely common for people to begin one career path and have a change of heart later on. Even if you feel set on one particular major, you may dabble in a class outside your program that inspires you to take a new direction. Be open to the possibilities! I will have to take many courses outside my major, too Did you know that maybe only around one-third of the courses you take in college will be directly related to your major? This is because colleges require you to take general education classes as well, which are meant to enrich your mind in a variety of areas and increase your overall outlook. Do not think that just because you selected chemistry as your major that you will only be studying chemistry for the next four years. In fact, you may only get to take one or two chemistry classes your first year. No matter their major, college students must take classes in the sciences and in the humanities; usually, the only exception is AP scores (and other analogous test scores) from high school that count for college credits. However, try to see general education requirements in a positive light. You can explore unique courses, such as Ancient Egyptian Art and Freudian Psychology, and learn about other fields you did not even know existed. To fulfill a math requirement, I took a class called Applied Statistics my sophomore year. Even though I was initially unexcited about having to take a college-level math class, I ended up learning a great deal and even developing a love for statistics. You never know until you try! Now you know: selecting a certain major is not an irreversible action, your major can be slightly unrelated to your eventual career, and you will still be able to take classes outside your program. You have the grammar, the pronunciation, the syntax. You have the essential receptive and productive language skills â€" listening and reading, and speaking and writing, respectively. And you have all those quirks that a particular language might have: a strange common idiom, an idiosyncratic way that nouns and adjectives need to agree, or the particular stress of a syllable.All of this contributes to make learning a language one of the most difficult â€" and intimidating â€" tasks that there is.But then there is a language like Cantonese, which necessarily brings its own particular challenges. The different script â€" as in, the non-alphabetic, logographic writing system. The phonetic differences, including the tonal structure of the language and the aspiration. And the fact that there are no verb tenses in the language at all â€" o nly temporal indications through the adverbs.All of this makes Cantonese a little tricky to get your head around â€" at least at first.Yet, there is something even more important than all of this for learning Cantonese â€" and arguably any language. That’s vocabulary learning, the process by which you will be encountering, memorizing, and using a new word. To some experts in linguistics, this is the most important part of the process of learning a second language.And so, we’re here to tell you how best to learn your new vocabulary. They might have fallen in love. Life might have led them to move to a particular place. They might have developed that strange interest in a place that just comes out of nowhere.So, if you’re convinced that you want to be fluent in your language, there’s often no changing your mind. And we’re guessing that, if you are here, Cantonese is the language fo r you.Without much more, we’ll let you know at least that it is a great language to learn, by the way. Sixty million people speak Cantonese, in one of the most commercially and culturally important areas of the world: China’s Guangdong province, Hong Kong, and Macau.But it’s also one of those wonderful languages that native speakers of different languages learn to communicate with each other: a lingua franca. It’s used as such across southeast Asia.As we said before though, this information probably isn’t enough to get you interested in the language. Practice your Cantonese vocab - and head to Hong Kong!Why Focus on Learning Vocabulary?A more important question really is why so much focus on learning vocab?This isn’t as daft as it may sound. Yes, we all know that languages are made up of words â€" thanks. And so, without vocabulary, you aren’t going to go very far â€" thanks again.But it’s more important than that.Many linguists believe that our normal vocabularies are actually much smaller than we might assume. Whilst there might be over 170,000 words in the English language, the reality is that we use just the tiniest fraction of these day-to-day.Three hundred words, actually, make up sixty-five percent of the things we say.Think about that for a moment. With three hundred words, you can unlock the majority of content, speech, and lines in a given language. And, around those most common words, you can build your grammar, your own speech.So, before you freak out about the amount of stuff you need to memorize, just think. T hree hundred words. That’s getting you over half of the way to fluency. After that, when you build vocabulary, you are only becoming more advanced â€" but you know the essentials already.Learn how to write in Cantonese!How to Learn Vocabulary in Cantonese.With that thought in mind, we hope you are going into your Cantonese vocabulary acquisition process with happy thoughts and a bit of optimism. Because developing a bit of fluency in a language is not as hard as you are often told it is.Anyway, here are some ways to extend your own vocabulary list. They are, in fact, the only ways you’re going to improve your vocabulary.Find out the Most Common Cantonese Words.The step for a language learner hoping to develop their vocabulary skills is to check out the most common words in their target language.You’ll find these quite easily with a quick Google. Memrise, for example, has a great feature on precisely this.This list of words will constitute the fundamental elements of your vocab ulary development. It provides a substantial and systematic way of organising your lexical learning â€" rather than just learning the words that you encounter (which is something that you will do later). Find new vocabulary from your reading.Write Down Your New Cantonese Words.If you have found these word lists, then write them down for your own personal study.Yes, we said write them down. We don’t mean copy and paste, print, or type up. We mean literally write them down. In this process, words stick better. You have to think about them, their shape, their sound, their ‘spelling’.And we say ‘spelling’ because you need to write these words, initially at least, both in the Chinese characters and in their Romanized form. This way, you’ll get used to the shape and image of the Chinese character, but also have the crutch for your pronunciation.Accompany this information with the meanings, any phonetic aids (such as the tones), and any mnemonic that will help your memorization.Create a Cantonese Dictionary or Flashcard Bank.With these words, you can do a couple of things â€" yet the aim here is to have a database of your new vocabulary.This can be in flashcards â€" that you can carry around and flick through whenever you have a spare moment. These are good if you want to test yourself or want other people to test you on your new words.Or, you can be old school and use a dictionary â€" but only one that you have made yourself. Building a receptive vocabulary is great, sure, but if you actually want to use these words, you’re going to have to develop that productive part of your language knowledge too. So, write them down; produce that language that you are hoping to memorise.Find tips on Cantonese characters!Use Language Apps.Once you have got the basics down, try using language applications on your phone. Depending on how sophisticated they are, you can use them to practice all of your language skills â€" from reading and writing to speaking and listening.What apps like Memrise, Duolingo, and Babbel do is organise your language learning into thematic stages â€" with quizzes, challenges, and tests. These provide vocabulary relevant to the particular them e that you are studying â€" and reinforce your knowledge through repetition, primarily.When you are on the move, they are a great way to keep practising. But don’t rely on them entirely. The internet is a great place to learn Cantonese vocabularyImmerse Yourself in the Language.What you really want to be doing to develop your language skills is to pick up language and vocabulary from authentic contexts and situations. This means that your primary aim â€" after the initial three hundred words â€" should be to discover new words in dialogues, books, tv programmes, etc etc. In other words, places from which Cantonese people would learn language themselves.This, among other things, means that you ought to do the following:Read Cantonese literature and magazines;Listen to Cantonese radio and music;Watch Cantonese television and films.In these places, you will find all sorts of colloquialisms, idioms, and expressions â€" and you’ll find that you’ll recognise many more words than you think you will.Remember, after those first three hundred words, you are much better than you think you are.Find other Cantonese learning strategies!Simply Translate the Words You Need.At th is point, you are welcome to just translate yourself the words that you encounter in the world.We don’t recommend things like Google Translate. Rather, find a reliable source of information on Cantonese, such as an Oxford Dictionary, a dictionary published by Routledge, or another prestigious institution.Encounter a word, translate it, and write it down. Then you can start to memorise it.Use Your New Words.Yet, the fun starts when you actually start using your new vocabulary. There is no point learning it if you don’t intend to use it.So find a native speaker of Cantonese â€" either a tutor or a friend. And practise, practise, practise.
